Buffalo State falls to Oneonta after fielding errors allowed unearned runs to score

Buffalo State’s softball team (15-16, 8-8 SUNYAC) fell to Oneonta in both matches on Saturday afternoon at the Red Dragon Stadium in Oneonta, NY as errors gave the Red Dragons free runs.

Game 1, L 6-9
Six of the nine runs scored by Oneonta were unearned. Izzy Pezdek allowed 11 hits and struck out three batters in 5.2 innings in the circle. Emma Hooftallen switched with Pezdek and pitched to the last Oneonta batter, who grounded out to the shortstop.

Sarah Congelosi was 2-of-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a walk while Caitlyn Parsons was 1-of-3 with two RBIs. Pezdek was 1-of-3 with a run scored and two RBIs as she hit her first collegiate home run.

Buffalo State got on the board in the top of the first inning as Parsons reached first on a fielder’s choice to score Grace Albano, who singled and then advanced to second on the throw to start the inning.

Errors cursed the Bengals in the bottom of the inning as the Red Dragons scored four unearned to take a 4-1 lead over Buffalo. Oneonta scored again in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch.

Parsons singled up the middle in the third to score Congelosi, who also got on base with a single.

A single from Lexi Quagliana in the fifth scored Albano and Congelosi, who were both walked, to make it a 5-4 game in favor of the Red Dragons.

Oneonta put up a crooked number in the bottom of the inning after a triple scored both runners on base. The Bengals scored a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 7-6 after Pezdek homered to score herself and Kenzie Scott.

Two unearned runs scored in the bottom of the sixth for Oneonta, who held off the Bengals in the seventh to give Buffalo State a three-run loss.

The Bengals managed eight hits while the Red Dragons had 11.

Game 2, L 3-4
Pezdek pitched the first four innings of the second match before Hooftallen came in as relief. Pezdek allowed three earned runs, five hits and three walks. Hooftallen allowed three hits and had one strikeout in two innings.

The Bengals had five hits while the Red Dragons managed eight. No one from Buff State had an RBI.

Quagliana was 1-of-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Mya Hurley was 1-of-3 with one run scored.

Oneonta scored first but a groundout from O’Hara pushed runners over to second and third base. A pass ball scored Hurley and moved Quagliana to third before she scored on an error from the catcher to lead 2-1.

The Red Dragons scored an unearned run in the third to tie the match up at two runs each.

A triple from Oneonta scored both runners on base, which gave the Red Dragons an advantage over Buff State.

Quagliana doubled in the fifth inning and then took third on an error from the short stop before she scored an unearned run as O’Hara got on base from an error by first base.

Buff State had three more hits to finish the game but neither team scored, which finalized the game at 4-3 in favor of Oneonta.

The Bengals return to the field on May 2 to face Alfred University in Alfred, NY. The games were originally scheduled for April 17 but were moved due to weather. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The games against the University of Rochester on April 30 have been canceled.
