“Jimmy Kimmel Live” is being pulled off the air indefinitely as of yesterday adding on to the pile of hits that the world of late night television has received over the past few months.
Similar to the cancellation of the “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” set to end in May of next year, the decisions from the networks occurred when each show’s respective host criticized Donald Trump and the Republican party.
ABC pulled “Jimmy Kimmel Live” off the air indefinitely on Wednesday night after Kimmel made remarks regarding the death of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk.
The decision to yield the late night show’s broadcasting came just hours after the head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implied that ABC’s broadcast license could be at risk due to Kimmel’s comments.
Based on the speed in which ABC and the FCC have pulled the plug, you would think the former Emmys host made some pretty vile comments regarding Kirk’s assassination.
During Monday’s monologue, Kimmel made the suggestion that Charlie Kirk’s killer was a Trump supporter saying that “the MAGA Gang desperately [tried] to characterize this kid […] as anything other than one of them and [are] doing everything they can to score political points from it”.
After reading the host’s comments, it becomes clear that his criticism was placed on the Republican party and was very loosely related to Charlie Kirk himself.
The situation reads all too familiar with how Paramount Global, CBS’s parent company, decided to end “The Late Show” just days after Colbert called out the network for paying Donald Trump $16 million in a lawsuit settlement.

When making the announcement about the cancellation, Colbert assured viewers that he wasn’t being replaced by another host and that “this is all just going away”.
Though the network attested that the show’s cancellation was merely a “financial decision”, many of Colbert’s late night colleagues, as well as Stephen himself, have pushed back on those claims. The Writers Guild of America called for an investigation of the cancellation to be done by the New York state attorney general.
Despite the loss of “The Late Show”, Stephen Colbert appeared at the Emmys this past Sunday as a presenter and was met with a standing ovation from the crowd as they chanted “Stephen! Stephen! Stephen!”. As the audience settled down, Colbert joked “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?”. Later in the evening, “The Late Show” won the award for outstanding talk series.
President Trump took to social media after the announcement of Kimmel’s indefinite plug from air to express his excitement as well as to suggest that NBC cancel “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers”.
“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!” he said.
While the future of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is still unclear, an insider has shared that the comedian is not currently fired and Disney will be discussing with Kimmel about next steps for when he is allowed back on air.
