Football falls to Alfred, 34-10
September 17, 2016
As they say, possession is nine-tenths of the law. The Alfred Saxons proved that on Saturday with a 34-10 win over the Buffalo State Bengals. Alfred was able to control the clock all day, maintaining possession for 43:58.
“I have to give credit to Alfred. They might have one of the best quarterbacks in the league and he had quite a day against us,” head coach Jerry Boyes said. “I think there was some discipline issues in terms of ‘Well, I’ve got this assignment, and I’ve got to stay home on my assignment’, instead of staying inside where they should be.”
Tyler Johnson leads a potent option attack:
- • The senior quarterback ran for 92 yards on 19 carries and led all players with four touchdowns.
- • Johnson had an efficient day threw the air, throwing for 160 yards and connecting with five different receivers for key first downs to keep multiple drives alive.•
- • The Saxons running back committee of senior Casey Bright and junior Maleke Fuentes combined for 165 yards on 37 carries. Fuentes scored late in the game.
- • The Saxons gained 412 total yards of offense to Buffalo State’s 196.
- • The Buffalo state defense couldn’t get off the field. Alfred went 8 of 16 on third down and converted 4 of 6 fourth down tries.
The Dale Stewart show:
- • The Bengals ran almost exclusively out of the wildcat formation. The torrential downpour the beginning of the game may have had something to do with it.
- • Junior running back Dale Stewart was a de facto quarterback, running for 154 yards on 17 carries and scoring a 55-yard touchdown. He has scored all of Buffalo State’s touchdowns through two games.
No fly zone:
- • Quarterback Aaron Ertel went three for eight passing for 32 yards. The Bengals game plan centered on the run game. They ran the ball 36 times (81% of the time).
- • Tre Jones added seven carries for 15 yards.
- • Marc Montana connected on a 33-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter
Alfred still has Buffalo State’s number:
- • Alfred has won the last five meetings between the teams.
- • Buffalo State has not beaten Alfred since 1995.
Moving on:
- • Buffalo State falls to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in Empire Eight play. Alfred improves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in Empire Eight play.
- • The Bengals will be at home Saturday for the homecoming game against Morrisville State for a noon kickoff.
