The Buffalo State women’s club rugby team finished their season strong, battling through although loss against Geneseo this past Saturday with a final score of 34-20. They finished the season with a 5-2 record.

With Geneseo playing strong defense, the women found it difficult to push past the try line in hopes of scoring.

“We had the ball most of the time,” captain Mary Sica said, “we just couldn’t get past them to score.”

Finally after failing most of the game to push past the Geneseo defense, Gabby Buzzelli broke through and scored two tries, and Alex Miller- Wampler scored one, putting the Bengals on the board.

“It was a good game, they’re a really tough team,” Buzzelli said. “We knew going into this game it was going to be hard, we both are evenly ranked in the league”.

Buzzelli is a senior at Buffalo State and has been with the team for three years. She plays fly house; her role is to direct the plays for the back lines (the sprinters).

In two weeks, the ladies will take the field against Geneseo in the first round of the playoffs.

The loss on Saturday bumped Buffalo State down a spot in the rankings to third.

Buffalo State will use the next two weeks as a chance to learn from their mistakes from the past game and to grow together even more as a team.

“We have some stuff we need to work on to prepare for the game,” Sica said. “We have two weeks to train and work on our conditioning as well as working on drills, running low with the ball as well as needing to work on breaking through defenses.”

“Last season we did really well,” Buzzelli said. “We’re just as good as we were last year and we can go even farther this time around. We have potential to do it all again even though we lost some good players this year, we just have to work together.”
