Women’s rugby flattens Fredonia, 62-3, moves to 5-0
October 7, 2015
On Saturday, the Buffalo State women’s club rugby team remained undefeated with a 62-3 blowout win over Fredonia.
With Captain Mary Sica sitting out again with a sprained ankle suffered in last week’s game against Brockport, the girls played a high energy, clean game through rain and wind.
“Our team likes the rain,” Sica said. “We live in Buffalo, so we’re used to playing in the rain and practicing in the rain. I think we play a lot better in it.”
As the girls took the muddy field, they found it more difficult to stay onside.
“If we have to fix something for a game, we go into practice the next week to work on it specifically,” junior Emily Sneck said. “We did have a lot of offside penalties, but that’s something we’re working on and I feel that we’re getting better at.”
Rugby entails a lot of strategy and coaches often move players around to play to their strengths. Alison Kolczynski is a junior that plays flanker as well as 8-man.
“Flanker is when I’m positioned on the side of the scrum,” Kolczynski said, “My job is to get off the scrum as fast as I can and get whoever has the ball. 8-man is when I’m at the very back of the scrum so I can help drive the ball through. I also have the opportunity to do an 8-man pick and go right into the scrum. I love both positions, but I think I’m better suited at 8-man, I can help drive the scrum as well as get off quickly to tackle.”
Following the win, the Buffalo State Club Rugby Alumni hosted a lunch for the team.
“There was a lot of alumni I haven’t seen in a while,” Sica said.” The girls made cupcakes and brought pasta salad and hot dogs for us. It was awesome to see them.”
As the girls look to next week, they get ready to face Geneseo with hopes of bringing home a win and keeping their undefeated season alive.
“It should be a pretty tough game,” Sica said. “I have all the confidence we can do it though and remain undefeated.”
