Women’s rugby brushes off Brockport, win 66-0

The Buffalo State women’s rugby team continued their strong season as they brought home a dominating shutout win over Brockport, 66-0.

Captain Mary Sica was injured in the first 10 minutes of the game, and with the ladies only allowed seven substitutions during a game, they made a decision to put in freshman forward Teresa Tokasz in Sica’s place.

It was Tokasz’s first collegiate action as she hadn’t played in a game since high school.

“We weren’t sure how she was going to do,” Sica said, “but she did really well and impressed all of us.”

The ladies are motivated to continue their season strong after getting off to their first 4-0 season. They played a clean game with only minor penalties and no yellow cards.

“Everyone played smart,” forward Nicole Montanino said. “It was a good, smart game. We had the opportunity to put in the freshmen and have them play with us.”

As the ladies prepare for next week’s game against Fredonia, they will enter practice working on open-field tackling and conditioning. Although they’re a solid team with no major weaknesses, the girls feel that they can improve defensively in order to miss fewer tackles.

“It is extremely hard to work on tackling in practice which is part of the issue,” Sica said. “Sometimes, if we need to work on tackling, we will find another women’s team in Buffalo to practice on, because your teammates are some of your best friends and you don’t want to hurt them.”

This Saturday, the Buffalo State Rugby Alumni will come to support the ladies and enjoy their annual Alumni Lunch before Buffalo State takes the field at noon.

“It’s really cool and exciting”, Sica said. “It’s always exciting to see the girls I first started out with and have them watch our game. Fredonia is always a fun, close game so it should be a good game to play.”
