Where are they now? Disney starlets and their post-Mickey fame

Time and time again we are seeing our favorite Disney Channel stars take a dive off the deep end. Growing up they had fame, the fans and fortune, but what happens when the show is over?  Except for a select few, post-Disney Channel life involves trouble with the law – including drugs and alcohol.

Here are some of our favorite stars that haven’t made the post-Disney transition that well.

Miley Cyrus

There couldn’t be an article about Disney stars going berserk without Miley coming into the mix.  Like many other female Disney stars, she stole the hearts of many young girls when she starred in Hannah Montana. The franchise spurred music sales, clothing lines, toys and even a theatrical film. Unlike her one-hit-wonder father, Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s career looked promising.

In 2010, a video surfaced of Miley smoking drugs and having a pretty good time at her 18th birthday. By the age of 19, Miley was engaged and beginning her shift from innocent Disney star to pop icon. Many thought the teenager was far too young to be considering marriage after her engagement with actor Liam Hemsworth. With only a minor drug incident, things didn’t look too bad.  If only they knew what was to come.

In August 2012, Miley chopped off her long locks. Many fans were concerned with how she would manage her hair for the wedding, but she has since kept the new style. After the split between her Hemsworth, Miley began to lash out with provocative music videos, raunchy television appearances and even shed light on what she thinks “twerking” really is.

Sadly, all of her actions cover up some of the meaningful lyrics on her Bangerz album. Many say that all of Miley’s recent stunts have been her way of coping with the loss of Liam. Either way, she is definitely not the Hannah Montana we remember.

Lindsay Lohan

I’m sure everyone wanted a long-lost twin after watching Lindsay Lohan in The Parent Trap. And who wouldn’t? Lindsay was quickly on the rise becoming one of Disney’s most well-known faces. She became a triple threat: actress, singer and dancer. The redheaded star had her breakthrough in Mean Girls, which became one of the most quoted movies of all time. But like so many before her, the transition from child actress to older audiences can easily be described as a catastrophe.

2007 was the beginning of a long list of charges that Lohan has racked up. Starting with DUI charges and cocaine use, warrants were issued for Lohan due to skipping court numerous times. Things were relatively quiet for Lindsay in 2008 and 2009 but picked right back up in 2010.  After going blonde, Lindsay posted at least $250,000 for bail after skipping court appearances and ultimately having her probation revoked time after time.  She even had some profanities written on her nails for one of her court appearances.

Lindsay added theft to her legal repertoire after stealing a necklace from a Venice jewelry store in 2011.  She served some jail time along and had to do community service. Then, 2012 became the year of reckless driving when Lohan was accused of hitting various pedestrians with her car, but none of the charges actually stuck due to lack of evidence.

Lindsay appears to have cleaned up her act this time, and hopefully for good.  Other than a few less-than-conservative Instagram posts, Lohan kept herself clean in 2013.  Let’s just see what 2014 has in store.

While there are many other Disney ladies that have gone wild, there are a small number that made their transitions almost flawlessly. Not every star has to have a slew of charges, drugs and alcohol to make themselves popular in the public eye.

Hilary Duff

Even if you never watched an episode, it is hard not to attach Hilary Duff with her role in Lizzie McGuire.  The show provided teens with comical answers to all the troubles that high school can bring about.  She also starred in other Disney films which paved her way to larger roles on the big screen. Music was also a big part of her Disney career that evolved into four studio albums.

Once her time with Disney was up, Hilary’s pursuit in music was rewarding, but also allowed her to keep her sweeter persona.  Unlike pop stars of the time, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, Hilary was sexy without being sleazy. Her music was more than simple pounding club beats. While she has been on a seven-year hiatus, Hilary plans to release a fifth album sometime in 2014.

Hilary married Canadian hockey player Mike Comrie in 2010, and the two welcomed their son Luca into the world in 2012. Despite recently announcing their divorce, the pair plan to remain very close friends.

Hilary Duff has done very well for herself and still remains one of America’s favorite Disney stars.  In her years in the spotlight, there were almost no traces of any controversies or scandals.  She was never arrested, nor has she done any crazy stunts.  She may not be the most popular woman out there, but you cannot deny that she is an excellent role model.

Brenda Song

Brenda is another member of the elite Disney channel ladies who hasn’t been engulfed by the Hollywood party life.  Like Duff, her record and public image are nearly spotless.  She is best known as London Tipton in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.  In numerous interviews, Brenda has voiced her strong views about being a good role model for girls growing up.

Sadly, Brenda was forced to file a lawsuit against an escort agency after a copyrighted image of her was used in an advertisement.  The agency clearly didn’t recognize who the star was, and posted the image.  In addition to Disney lawyers, Brenda and her personal attorney filed a libel suit against the agency.  Song obviously won the lawsuit, and she made it clear that she was never involved with the agency.

Besides dabbling into the music industry, Brenda aired on Pass the Plate, a Disney Channel mini-series that helped educate kids on healthy living and nutrition.  She also took a stand on preserving the environment through various Disney campaigns.

Ironically, Brenda has been in an on-and-off relationship with Trace Cyrus. Recognize that last name?  Trace is the step-brother of Miley Cyrus.  Maybe some of Brenda’s positive influence will rub off on Miley.
