As students embark on their college journeys, the financial hurdles can often seem overwhelming, especially when it comes to equipping themselves with essential course materials. But what if there was a way to alleviate some of that burden before classes even start? Buffalo State’s book deferment program has all the answers to your financial needs.
What is a Book Deferment? A book deferment is a financial tool that allows students to use the remains of their upcoming financial aid, to purchase class materials before those funds are officially disbursed.
Barnes and Noble Bookstore Manager Lisa Puma said this program enables students to “use the funds that are coming ahead of time to purchase class materials so they can do well and get them at the start of classes.”
With a book deferment, you’ll be better prepared to tackle your courses from day one. Step 1: Complete Your Book Deferment Online First, you will need to complete the book deferment application process, which can be done online or through Banner, the college’s student information system. Once you submit your book deferment request, be mindful that the funds will not be available until 24 hours after submission. Puma said many students often unsuccessfully try to make purchases before their deferment is processed.
“Students usually don’t wait 24 hours, which can cause much confusion and possible delays, even causing materials to become sold out,” Puma said.
Ensuring that your application is filled out correctly, and you’re waiting the correct amount of time before attempting to purchase anything, will help with a smoother process. Planning ahead can prevent last-minute issues, allowing you to focus on your studies rather than shopping for supplies after classes have already begun. Step 2: Know What You Can Purchase Another super important benefit of the book deferment is flexibility.
“The book deferment, because it’s your money, can be used on anything in the store,” Puma said.
This includes essentials beyond textbooks, such as school supplies, hygiene products, clothing, electronics and Metro bus passes. Being aware of this can save you time and help you stock up on everything you need for college life. Step 4: How Much to Take?
If you feel uncertain about how much to request, a store clerk can help you determine the appropriate amount based on your course materials and personal needs. Given her extensive experience, Puma’s guidance is extremely useful for students aiming to get the most from their deferment. “From my 20 years of experience being here, taking $750 is recommended, but you have the option to take out as much as you need,” Puma said. Step 5: Making Your Purchase When purchasing at the Buffalo State bookstore using your book deferment, be sure bring a form of identification, such as your student ID or an New York State ID as well as your Banner number. Provide your required information at the cash register and inform the staff that you’d like to use your book deferment. Step 6: Returning Unused Funds Always consider taking a bit extra if you are unsure about your needs.
“Always err on the side of extra,” because the funds you don’t use will be returned to you in the form of a refund check, Puma said.
This approach helps you avoid being short on materials while ensuring that you have the necessary resources for your college courses.
“We’ve set this program up strictly for student’s financial and academic success,” Puma said, “and we’d like to see more students taking advantage of this opportunity.”
