The annual Pumpkin Drop, organized by the department of geosciences, took place during Bengal Pause today/this past Tuesday outside of Buckham Hall.
As in previous years, organizations were invited to decorate their own pumpkin to be tossed off the roof. But this year, a trophy was awarded for best decorated pumpkin, which The Great Lakes Center won.

This was likely the 15th annual drop, according to event organizer Dr. Stephen Vermette. Originally, the event was held by the meteorology/climatology club to celebrate the fall equinox. Though the club no longer exists, the tradition remains a celebration of the turn of the season.
Though the Pumpkin Drop has been in flux over the years — moving from the old Classroom Building to Buckham, changing in popularity — the spirit of the event has remained the same.
“The original mission was to give everyone pause from their busy schedule and acknowledge a climate event — an inflection point of our four seasons,” Vermette said. “It is an opportunity to come together and celebrate.”
