This past weekend marked the conclusion of the 2025 US Open, also signaling the end of the Grand Slam season for tennis.
The two-week long tournament had its fair share of headlines (one involving a haircut), upsets, and memorable moments, all leading to the final matches that took place on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon in the shadows of New York City.
Saturday night was headlined by the women’s final match, which saw ATP women’s world #1 Aryna Sabalenka face ATP #8-ranked Amanda Anisimova, with Sunday afternoon’s contest pitting ATP men’s world #1 Jannik Sinner against ATP #2-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s final match.
#1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. #8 Amanda Anisimova
Aryna Sabalenka walked into New York as the defending champion, having won the 2024 US Open and aiming to successfully defend her throne. Amanda Anisimova came in defeated after a soul-crushing 6-0, 6-0 straight set loss in the Wimbledon final just over a month prior. Both women had something to prove and everything to gain when they stepped onto the main court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sabalenka was on her game, converting 5 0f 6 break points, while Anisimova was on her tail, converting 4 of the 7 break points of her own. Unforced errors are what separated the two, with Sabalenka’s 15 compared to Anisimova’s 29. The efficiency of Sabalenka on her serve was another feather in her cap on the night, suffering only two double faults while winning her second serve points at a 71% clip. Upon arriving to the Big Apple, Anisimova held a 6-3 head-to-head record the world’s best player, including eliminating her en route to the Wimbledon final. However, under the lights, Aryna Sabalenka was too much for the American to handle, taking her down 6-3, 7-6 in straight sets. The ATP world #1 took home the US Open title, becoming the first woman to win back-to-back US Open titles since the legendary Serena Williams. Sabalenka now holds four Grand Slam Championships, tightening her grip at the top of women’s tennis.
#1 Jannik Sinner vs. #2 Carlos Alcaraz
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are no strangers to one another, especially in 2025, with this US Open final being the third consecutive Grand Slam final they have met, and arguably the most important of them all. This match was to determine who would be ATP world #1 to close out the Grand Slam calendar and break the 1-1 split from the Wimbledon and Roland Garros finals in the process. The anticipation was off the charts, well-known celebrities such as Stephen Curry, Spike Lee, Kenny Hart, and many more filled the stands in order to catch the action up close. As a total surprise, President Donald Trump made his way down to New York City to be among those in attendance, causing the scheduled 2:00 pm match to be delayed.
When Sinner and Alcaraz eventually took the court, it was off to the races, with Alcaraz as the early aggressor. Sinner was able to whether the early pressure put on by his rival, settling in to take the second set with relative ease before Carlitios began turning the heat back up. Alcaraz maintained firm control of the match with his serve, winning 98 of his 101 service games, while simultaneously, racking up 42 winners to just 24 unforced errors. Despite the greatness of Jannik Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam Champion, Carlos Alcaraz was simply on another level the entire two weeks in New York, putting together an unforgettable performance to stake claim to a second US Open title (6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4). The victory gives Alcaraz his sixth Grand Slam Championship and his spot back at #1 in the ATP rankings, ending Sinner’s 65-week run at the top. This title now puts the new champion in an elite class alongside the likes of Novak Djokovic and his idol, Rafael Nadal, as one of the few players who has won multiple Grand Slams on each surface (hard court, grass, and clay). The Spaniard now holds a 10-5 record against Italy’s Jannik Sinner, but as the two best players in tennis today at the young ages of 22 and 24, respectively, their rivalry is just getting started.
That’s a wrap on the 2025 US Open and Grand Slam season. The next event to be on the lookout for in the world of tennis is the upcoming Six Kings Slam, the second time it’s ever been held. The exclusive event will air on Netflix from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on October 15th, 16th, and 18th.
