The Philadelphia Eagles are officially the champions of Super Bowl LIX without leaving any doubt about who the better team was.
In the 40 to 22 win against the Kansas City Chiefs, Jalen Hurts led the way with 221 passing yards going 17/22, rushing for 72 yards on eleven rushing attempts, two passing touchdowns, one rushing and a quarterback rating of 119.7 earning himself Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player.
Chiefs won the toss opting to defer and receive the ball in the second half giving the Eagles ball first. Eagles had the ball moving early on there first possession but due to a questionable offensive pass interference by star wide receiver A.J. Brown on a fourth and two this possession would end in a punt for the Eagles.
This wouldn’t kill the Eagles momentum however, as the Eagles defense with their consistent pressure paired with an uncharacteristic drop from Travis Kelce led to a Chiefs punt.
After a 27-yard catch by the Eagles Jahan Dotson and the city of brotherly loves signature play the so called “tush push” with Jalen Hurts the Eagles would find themselves up 7-0 against the reigning Super Bowl Champs late into the first quarter.
The second quarter truly showed how this Eagles team could absolutely dominate, however not because of their offensive play but rather because of how well the Eagles defensive unit was playing. The quarter began with a Jalen Hurts interception and another 3 and out by the Chiefs. Eagles on the next possession would kick a field goal and go up 10-0.
If you wanted to summarize Super Bowl 59 with one possession it would be the Chief’s second possession of the second quarter. After having no time in the pocket and being sacked twice consecutively Patrick Mahomes would throw a pass intended for Deandre Hopkins just to get picked off by star rookie safety Cooper DeJean and returned for 38-yard touchdown.
The Chiefs would continue to struggle for the rest of the second quarter on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. At halftime, the Chiefs offense had a measly three yards rushing and 20 yards passing with Patrick Mahomes having thrown two interceptions. The Eagles would be flying high heading into the locker room at half hoping to hold onto their 24-0 lead.
After the half it would be more of the same for the rest of Super Bowl 59 as the Eagles would force a turnover on downs from the Chiefs on their second possession and the Eagles would score a 46-yard passing touch down to Devonta Smith putting them up 34-0.
The game had officially become out of reach, the only comeback in history even close to resembling this had been done by the Color Commenter of the game Tom Brady having overcome 27-3 deficit eight years earlier. The game would end with a score of 40-22 the Chiefs scoring two touchdowns against Eagles backups.
Overall, this Super Bowl while not the most exciting game to watch, it will certainly send a message around the NFL. That message being that the Kansas City Chiefs are not only beatable but can be embarrassed just like everyone else. Something that over these past few years has seemed to be forgotten.
The Eagles have laid out the formula, taking advantage of their matchups on the defensive line and giving Patrick Mahomes no time in the pocket. Forcing him to make quick decisions and not allowing the play to develop. It truly cannot be stated enough how well the defensive line was able to apply pressure and to accomplish this without having blitzed the entire game.
To do that and have six sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, causing pressure on 38% of plays is unheard of, and a true testament of how great this Eagles defensive line is.
Another reason why Eagles defense was so good was because of highly respected and renowned defensive mastermind Vic Fangio whose defensive scheme seemed to throw Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid for a loop.
With the Eagles winning their second Super Bowl and already slotted as favorites to win the 2025 season’s Super Bowl, we can only hope for these next six months to fly by and take us to National Football League (NFL) preseason.
In the meantime, surely there will be plenty of trades, cuts, free agent signings, and of course draft talk to keep us occupied. Until then that will wrap our amazing and exciting NFL season.
