Another weekend of chaos in the NFL, as teams we thought were going to be good are quickly digging themselves into a bigger hole and some other teams continue to surprise everyone. So, who are the contenders and who are the pretenders after week three. Well, I present this week’s top 10 power rankings.
10. New Orleans: 2-1 Previous Rank: 9
The Saints lost a nail-biter to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday 15-12. This game was envisioned to be an explosive high scoring game as New Orleans had scored 91 points in their first two games. However, as the teams entered the fourth quarter, New Orleans were up 3-0 but ended up losing 15-12 as they had no answer for Saquon Barkley, who scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The Saints now take a short trip to Georgia to take on the division rival Atlanta Falcons for their next game at Mercedes- Benz Stadium.
9. Green Bay 2-1: Previous: Unranked
The Pack is back! The boys from Lambeau rolled over the Titans 30-14, and did it with their backup. Not just anyone, but the former Titan Malik Wallis. This team hasn’t missed a beat since Jordan Love went down against the Eagles in week 1 in Brazil.
Malik Willis has filled in admirably and has wins against the Colts and Titans on his resume since putting on the green and yellow.
The Green Bay defense has been rock-solid as well, allowing an average of 12 points the last two weeks.
Green Bay now gears up for a real test this week as they take on the 3-0 Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field, who have looked just as impressive under Sam Darnold.
8. Houston: 2-1 Previous Rank: 3
The Texans took one on the chin from the Vikings on Sunday 34-7. In what was supposed to be the game of the day turned into a lopsided win. The Texans couldn’t muster up a running game without the services of Joe Mixon, and quarterback C.J. stroud was asked to do it all.
Unfortunately for Houston, it was too big of a task for Stroud as they were blown out by Minnesota. Stefon Diggs had a big day for his fantasy owners as he had 10 catches for 94 yards, but his reunion was spoiled by Darnold and the red hot Vikings.
The Texans look to get back in the win column against the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, who are reeling after a 47-10 loss at the hands of Buffalo at home in NRG Stadium.
7. Seattle: 3-0 Previous: Unranked
The Seahawks beat the Miami Dolphins with Skylar Thompson starting for the Dolphins in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa. The Seahawks then proceeded to knock Thompson out of the game leaving the Dolphins with third string QB Tim Boyle to finish the game.
The Seahawks went on to win easily by a score of24-3 as the Seahawks defense held the Dolphins to 205 total yards, albeit against backup quarterbacks. The Seahawks are a soft 3-0 team as they really haven’t beaten a quality opponent yet.
However, Seattle have a chance to prove their worth this coming Monday night as they square off against the Detroit Lions led by Jared Goff at Ford Field.
6. Pittsburgh: 3-0 Previous: Unranked
The black and gold make an appearance in the top 10 for the first time this season as they are off to a 3-0 start. The Steelers beat the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers 20-10 at home in front of a packed house of 66,734 at Acrisure Stadum.
Justin Fields has cemented himself as the starter of this team and it’s his job to lose with Wilson struggling with a calf injury. The Steelers, as they have always done in the past, rely on their defense to be the backbone of the team. The Steelers only allowed 168 total yards and sacked the quarterback five times.
Pittsburgh now take the show on the road and try and maintain that perfect record as they take on the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.
5. Philadelphia: 2-1 Previous Rank 8
The Eagles are tough to figure out. They could have lost to the Packers in week 1, but narrowly survived in Brazil. They should have beaten the Falcons in week two, but dropped the game after allowing a game-winning touchdown drive, and Sunday’s game against the Saints could have gone either way.
The Eagles did pull off a 4th quarter comeback with the help of Saquon Barkley’s two touchdowns. Barkley put the team on his back, carrying the ball 17 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Dallas Goedert had a great day as well, catching 10 balls for 170 yards.
The Eagles travel this week to the sunny confines of Florida where they will take on Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium.
4. Detroit: 2-1 Previous Rank: 7
The Lions went out to the desert in Arizona hungry and preyed on the Cardinals 20-13. Jared Goff threw two touchdowns and David Montgomery ran for 105 yards on his 23 carries as well.
The Lions and Head Coach Dan Campbell look to knock off the undefeated Seahawks as they host the birds from the west at Ford Field.
3. Minnesota: 3-0 Previous Rank: 4
Sam Darnold destroyed the Texans 34-7 throwing for four touchdowns. The Vikings have to be the biggest surprise of the season at 3-0.
First, no one expected Sam Darnold to quarterback this team to an undefeated start. Second, they have beaten quality opponents in San Franciso and Houston. The Vikings, Lions and Packers are all in the Power 10. The NFC North is going to be a battle.
The Vikings now take on Green Bay in a marquee matchup in week four, traveling to Green Bay in search of their first 4-0 start since 2016 at Lambeau Field.
2. Buffalo: 3-0 Previous Rank: 2
Josh Allen Josh Allen Josh Allen. Did I mention Josh Allen? Allen dismantled the Jacksonville Jaguars and embarrassed them on National TV on Monday night football. This game was no contest as the Bills blew out the Jaguars 47-10.
The play calling by Joe Brady was impeccable. The Bills haven’t really beaten a quality opponent yet, but that can all change this week when they get battle tested traveling to Baltimore to take on the Ravens and the ever-elusive Lamar Jackson on Sunday night at M&T Bank Stadium.
1. Kansas City: 3-0 Previous Rank: 1
The Chiefs remain on top simply because they are still the Super Bowl champions and haven’t lost yet. They are 3-0 but an ugly 3-0.
Week 1 could have been a loss to Baltimore, but Isaiah Likely’s foot was out by a centimeter. Week 2 the Bengals had them on the ropes until late in the fourth quarter when Burrow fumbled, and McPherson missed an extra point after a touchdown.
Week 3 the Falcons got robbed on what was an obvious pass interference on Kansas City which would have given the Falcons the ball on the 1-yard line for the winning score at the end of the game. The Chiefs being the Chiefs beat the Falcons 22-17 to remain undefeated and stay atop the Power 10 poll.
They now take on the beat up Chargers in Los Angeles as Sofi Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Honorable Mention: New York Jets
Dropped Out: San Francisco (5) Tampa Bay (6) Dallas (9)
