Dr. Bonita Durand has been officially recognized as Buffalo State University’s 10th president, a title she will hold through the end of her term on June 30.
The announcement came the morning of April 28 during a SUNY Board of Trustees meeting, where Dr. Durand was praised for her tireless work for the betterment of the university, including her efforts to address the institution’s deficit. The recognition marks the culmination of her tenure, during which she served as interim president since June 2023.
With the recognition, Dr. Durand will join the line of previous presidents who have led Buffalo State, with her portrait set to be displayed in Rockwell Hall.
Following the announcement, Dr. Durand issued the following statement:
“Chancellor, thank you for this opportunity to serve the citizens of New York by providing access, opportunity and social mobility through Buffalo State University,” she said. “As I conclude my tenure of leadership, I am hopeful that the work I have led in the last three years has added to the integrity of Buffalo State and has placed it on a solid path for success under its next president.”
Dr. Durand previously served Buffalo State for 22 years as chief of staff and secretary to the Buffalo State College Council before retiring in 2018. She returned to the university when she was appointed interim president and has continued to serve in that role for the last three years.
