Spectator violence continues at Sports Arena

Less than two weeks after a fight broke out between spectators and basketball players at Buffalo State University’s Sports Arena, another fight took place following Friday night’s game.

Two of the four people involved in the altercation were caught with guns and taken into custody. According to Buffalo State’s Interim President Bonita Durand, none of the individuals are associated with Buffalo State University and have subsequently been barred from returning to the campus.

Two University Police officers suffered minor injuries while diffusing the situation.

Durand says while security measures were and will continue to be amplified as a result of the Jan. 30 incident, the Buffalo State community needs to do its part by immediately alerting University Police of suspicious activity.

In the meantime, the following precautions will remain in place:
• Increased surveillance of entrances to events in the Sports Arena
• New security screening procedures at entrances
• Increased UPD presence at events
• Increased presence of event staff at events
• Improved postgame procedures to expedite spectator departure from the arena
• Established new postgame areas for student-athletes to visit with friends and family

Students can direct questions or concerns to Vice President of Student Affairs Tim Gordon at [email protected].
