Buffalo vs. Plattsburgh, Feb. 9 2024.

Buffalo State’s women’s basketball (4-17, 1-14 SUNYAC) couldn’t outlast SUNY Plattsburgh (8-13, 5-10 SUNYAC) despite aggressive play and lost 55-48 on senior night.

Emma Cohen was the only Bengal in double-figures as she netted 13 points. Adiya Jones, who was arguably the most aggressive player on the court, and Chloe Hanson each added nine points along with 10 boards and four boards, respectively.

The Bengals managed 28 points off the bench, 20 points in the paint and only seven second-chance points. Buffalo State scored eight points in each of the first two quarters and found themselves at a deficit for the entirety of the game.

Jadyn Jones started things off with a bucket and then Grace Carey added a jumper to break a three-minute scoring drought and trail 7-4 heading into the media timeout.

Maddy Stearns attempted to connect with Carey but passed into double coverage and turned the ball over, which ultimately resulted in a bucket and an 11-5 advantage for Plattsburgh. The Bengals had questionable passes throughout the match and often passed to teammates that were heavily covered or did not check to see where the defenders were before bounce-passing to Wilson.

The Cardinals netted back-to-back threes while Cohen netter her own and the Bengals trailed 17-8 after the first quarter.

Hanson shot a pair from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to seven before she turned the ball over. Cohen added a fastbreak bucket and Plattsburgh jumped out to a 10-2 run to clutch a 27-14 advantage over Buffalo State with 1:26 until half time.

The Cardinals netted a pair in the paint and Hanson added a layup as the Bengals trailed 31-16 at the half.

Adiya Jones contributed a jumper and two free-throw shots to score the first four points of the second half before Jadyn Jones steered through traffic for a driving layup to trail 33-22.

Carey and Adiya Jones netted some free throws while Cohen and Kirsten Merritt drained threes to trail 35-31 with 2:50 left in the third. Despite the proximity of the match, Buffalo State was never able to pull themselves from behind.

The Bengals trailed 38-31 heading into the final quarter, but managed 15 points in the third quarter after they only scored eight points in the previous period.

Plattsburgh scored six quick points and then Carey netted a jumper to trail 44-33 with 9:02 left to play. The Cardinals really started to pull away as the Bengals looked tired.

Buffalo State went on a 7-2 run, capped by an and-one layup from Adiya Jones to trail 47-4 at the 4:45 mark. Cohen netted a triple and a jumper to trail by six before Merrit netted a three to make it 53-48 with 30 seconds to play.

The Bengals missed shots caught up to them and they lost, 55-48.

Buffalo State only made 29.8% of their shots from the field, 31.3% of their three-pointers and 60% of their free throws. They won the rebound battle 44-39.
