The Buffalo Sabres partnered with the Buffalo Common Council on Thursday to unveil a sign in dedication to the late Rick Jeanneret.
Jeanneret was the team’s broadcaster for the first 51 years of their existence and was an integral part of the Sabres organization. He was known as “the voice of the Sabres.”
The trailblazing sign was installed at the corners of Illinois Street, Perry Street and Washington Street and reads “RJ Way.”
The installation took place right before the Sabres hit the ice for their home and season opener against the New York Rangers to kick off their 2023 campaign.
All fans in attendance received a collectible “RJ Way” replica sign to remember the special occasion.
There was also a party in the plaza outside of KeyBank Center that fans attended. The first 5,000 fans received a “Let’s Go Buffalo” towel.
Not only the city and Sabres management honored the late Rick Jeanneret however, as the Sabres players also wore an “RJ” patch to show their support for the legendary broadcaster.
Finally, before puck drop, the Sabres had a video tribute and ceremony honoring Jeanneret with members of his family.
After the ceremony, the game between the Sabres and Rangers took center stage as both teams looked to start their 23-24 season off on the right foot.
