On Tuesday, Oct. 29, SUNY Buffalo State’s United Students Government held itsweekly meeting in Bulger West. During the meeting, members of USG discussed spending, spring fest and swore in new members.

Before the meeting began, the judicial council gave a brief presentation on its role in USG. Chief Justice Edward Bryant led the presentation and explained the role of the judicial council, which is comparable to the Senate of the United States government.

Members of the judicial council hear various cases, resolve conflicts, and serve as mediators. Once cases are heard, members vote and come to a conclusion. Bryant only votes if there is a tie.

“We were voted in by the students,” Bryant said.  “Abusing power is not our goal.”

Next, three members of USG were randomly picked out of a hat to be on the Springfest committee. Ashley Etienne, Yunocha Fair, and Tahini White were selected from the USG staff.

Alexis Childs was voted in to be USG secretary and since she was the only one who sent in a letter to be nominated for the position, she had no competition.

“I kind of wanted to take a step back and look at USG from a different side,” Childs said.  With 38 yays and two abstentions, Childs was also elected as one of the new USG senators.

Sen. Kevin Murray ran to become the new rules and regulations chair, and with 34 votes in favor and four abstentions, he won the position as he ran unopposed.

“I want to make sure that anything that happened in previous times doesn’t go on in the future,” Murray said.

“He’s on my committee and we’re going to be very sad to lose him,” USG Treasurer Justine Britten said of Murray. “Senator Murray is very opinionated, he has no problem being the odd person. I have total confidence in his knowledge of the constitution.”

Sen. Felipe Yanez also spoke in support of Murray.

“He’s dedicated,” he said. “He’s really great with time management, and he always gets things done.”

Both of the Chemistry and Forensics Club and Biology Club were up for re-recognition during the meeting and they provided PowerPoint presentations to demonstrate their importance to USG.

During the presentation, Chemistry and Forensics Club president Margo Weber listed the events the club has put on to demonstrate its importance and illustrated theupcoming Perry’s Ice Cream tour and LASERTRON event.

Biology Club president Katelin Kostek also included photos from events like trips to Whispering Pines and Medicinal Gardens. After their presentations, both clubs were granted re-recognition by USG.

Speaker Pro Tempore Ashleigh Sutherland will be hosting a taste-testing event withChartwells on Nov. 7. Sutherland hopes to show students that they do have a say in the food that they receive. USG will be having monthly tastings for venues on the retail side of Campbell Student Union.

At the end of the meeting, Childs and Murray were sworn into their new positions.
