Reasonable Weekend Getaways: Pt 1

Reasonable Weekend Getaways: Pt 1

Wouldn’t it be nice to just pick up and leave Buffalo for the weekend? With schoolwork piling up, it seems like wishful thinking. But I’ve found some unique stays – within driving distance – that can make you feel 1,000 miles away. It may be just what you need to hit that reset button!

Less than 4 hours away in the Thousand Islands NY, Capt Thompson’s Resort offers an upscale environment with astonishing views.

Our room was right on the water. The bed was big and comfortable. The jacuzzi was relaxing, and the flat-screen TV was hanging right above it – we drank wine and watched Spongebob right from the tub.

Our balcony was directly across from the historic Boldt Castle. The castle was built in 1900 by George Boldt for his wife Louise. She died unexpectedly just a few months before its construction was completed. It was left unfinished. It is now a popular tourist destination that can be reached by boat.

The boat leaves from directly behind Capt. Thompson’s and runs every 15 minutes. The castle is breathtaking. Not to mention, the photo opportunities are endless!  There are pictures hanging on every wall depicting the history of each of its 120 rooms.

During our stay we drove to several nearby restaurants to eat, and visited a fantastic winery, Coyote Moon Vineyards. Along with our wine tastings we received a complementary box filled with cheeses, fruit, meats and crackers, which was a pleasant surprise! We barely had room for dinner.

Waking up to the sunrise over the water was stunning. The winery was the best we’ve been to yet. We were delighted to find such a gem only a short distance away from home and can’t wait to go back!
