Today, SUNY Buffalo State president announced the newest change to the school policy for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.

President Katherine Conway-Turner announced this morning that there will be a strict dress code enforced on this campus starting next school year.

“Here at Buffalo State, we strive to have our students ready for the workforce. With that in mind we have been observing students for years now attending classes in pajamas and other garments of clothing that sometimes have explicit language, ” Conway-Turner said.

Conway-Turner went on to talk about the importance of her experience with career preparatory programs back when she attended college at the University of Kansas for both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

The dress code will ensure that all students are dressed appropriately for their major. Departments will have a chance to create a dress code specifically for their department that then has to be approved by the president.

“As the teachers of the future of this nation, we must ensure that we as an academic environment teach students how to professionally, effectively and successfully make it through their chosen career path,” said President Conway-Turner.

With that in mind, department chairs must use the dress code restrictions in the workforce as guidelines for the creation of their code.

Once approved by the president, all professors are mandated to add a dress code section to their syllabus. Points will be taking off of either student’s overall grade or participation grade depending on the rules of the department for not successfully following the dress code.

“For years, Buff State has had the reputation of being a party school, but I know that the students here want so much more than that. That’s why I think having the students dress the part for the position they want will give them motivation to strive for their goals even harder,” said Assistant Director of Student Life, Dr. Ashley Goodwin.

This dress code policy is modeled after the attendance policies recently added to many departments syllabus regulations.

The suggested/tentative dress code for most departments as of right now is business casual except for the business department where business formal is highly recommended.

The code will be in full effect starting August 2019.

President Conway-Turner plans to give away clothing and sponsor a few students academic wardrobe as she realizes that such a dress code may not be realistic for students of all backgrounds.

She also stated that she is looking to do collaborations with local thrift stores to ensure that all students have access to the clothes that they need.

Articles of clothing such as miniskirts, bermuda shorts, muscle shirts, or even sweatpants will no longer be allowed in classrooms. Shoes such as sandals, slides or uggs will no longer be accepted clothing for class as well.

You will no longer be able to put on anything you find in your closet after waking up later for class so get all the beautyrest you need over the summer break because…IT’S A JOKE.
