LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Buffalo can be a leader in the fight against climate change, fossil fuel use

Wes Thomas, NYPIRG Project Coordinator

Burning fossil fuels is carving a path to planetary destruction. Federal elected leaders have rejected the climate science consensus, so individual states need to lead the way to climate change solutions.

Here in New York, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is investigating ExxonMobil and other corporate oil and gas giants for their actions — and inaction — on climate change. There is documented proof that companies like Shell and Exxon knew about the devastating impacts that their operations were having on the planet. But, they told the public and their shareholders the opposite in order to protect their profits. Our Attorney General must follow through with this investigation.

Extractive industries have been pummeling our climate for decades. Exxon knew, and now we know. It’s time for the oil and gas industry to be held accountable and it’s time for the state and energy sector to invest in clean, green, renewable energy production jobs in Western New York. Buffalo can be a leader in the national fight against climate change.
