Buffalo State sophomore Connor Mergler has been named the SUNYAC Outstanding Male Swimmer of the year.

Mergler finished an outstanding second year in the program with three All-American certificates. In the SUNYAC Championships, Mergler broke both conference and meet records in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 20.25 seconds. Along with broken records, he won titles in three different events including the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle, all school records.

Later in March, Mergler traveled to Greensboro, N.C. for the NCAA Championships. He walked out of the championship with a fourth place finish in the 100-meter freestyle. Mergler also finished sixth in the 50-meter freestyle and 16th in the 200-meter freestyle to become the first All-American swimmer from Buffalo since Michael Grabowski did it in 1976.

Mergler is just the second Buffalo State swimmer to earn three individual All-American certificates in a season. John Meade was the first to do that in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle and the 100-meter fly back in 1974.
