The Buffalo State women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Union, 16-7 in its season opener at Frank Bailey Field on Tuesday.

Attacker Alana Herne scored four points for the Bengals. The sophomore picked up right where she left off last year in her freshman season when she led the team with 73 points.

Buffalo State got off to a quick start and took an early 2-1 lead. From there, Union got hot and tallied 10 consecutive goals to take an 11-3 lead.

The Dutchwomen then netted the first four goals of the second half and the Bengals failed to come up with any kind of response.

Sophomore midfielder Christina Krowel tallied a pair of goals and sophomore attacker Ally Ruggieri added another for Buffalo State.

The shot totals were telling; Union outshot the Bengals 31-17 and controlled the majority of the possession.

The season is still early for a young Buffalo State team that returned four starters from 2015. Head coach Lindsey Abbott is now in her second year under the helm and hopes to improve on last season’s 4-13 record.

The Bengals will play back-to-back games at Utica this weekend, taking on the Pioneers on Friday and facing Albright College on Saturday. Both games will have 4 p.m. starts.
