After the controversial firing of Sean McDermott and a weeklong search, Joe Brady was officially announced as the Buffalo Bills’ 21st head coach. The move came as a shock to the Buffalo fan base, as the response was mostly confusion. Terry Pegula, the owner of the Bills, expressed in a press conference following the firing that he believes the organization needed a change, this sentiment seemed to be shared by General Manager Brandon Beane.
This press conference was not received well by the fans and suffered heavy criticism from both local and national media. When Joe Brady, the former Offensive Coordinator for the Bills, was announced as head coach, the fan base again seemed to be in a state of shock and disbelief. However, there were mixed opinions among fans and the media.
Brady, a 36-year-old South Florida native, will be the youngest head coach in the 2026 National Football League (NFL) season. After having spent three years playing football at the College of William & Mary, he would move on to become a linebacker coach in 2013. Throughout the following seasons, Joe Brady moved around between College Football and the NFL.
He worked with notable names such as Sean Payton, current head coach of the Denver Broncos, and won a national championship in 2019 at Louisiana State University with star NFL quarterback Joe Burrow, wide receiver Jamar Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals, and wide receiver Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings. In 2020, he would then become the offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers after joining the Bills in 2022 as Quarterbacks Coach and Offensive Coordinator in 2023.
So finally, today on Jan. 29, 2026, a press conference was held with new head coach Joe Brady and the team’s General Manager. While it is still too early to tell what the overall opinion is in the public, from an early look, it seems to be positive feedback. After some time cooling off and a confident presser, fans seemed to be warming up to this new head coach.
“I didn’t take this job to shy away from expectations… I know what I signed up for,” Brady said.
He also talked about the rigorous process the Bills put him through and how he and Josh Allen remained distant and didn’t speak for a week during the process. However, he did express how Allen encouraged him once he got the position.
“Josh told me, ‘I didn’t help you get this job. You got this job,'” Brady said.
Josh Allen was present for his new head coach’s introduction press conference, sporting some crutches and a boot on his foot post-surgery.
Throughout this entire Buffalo Bills head coaching saga, there has seemed to be a lot of chaos and questions. With this press conference today, it has all seemed to settle for now. The next big task for this front office and head coach is to assemble a coaching staff that they believe to be championship-caliber coaches. While it has seemed to simmer for now, I am sure the next move is sure to make waves throughout the mainstream media and fan base.
