Often as students, we look for jobs in the wrong places. You end up doing something we hate just to make ends meet, think dead-end jobs in fast food or retail.
Instead of this, you could always look for work with your friends with an on-campus job. With 127 work-study jobs and over 200 jobs on Buffalo State’s campus, there are tons of opportunities to get employed. Many of these jobs pay from $14-$15 an hour with some going up to $17.
Senior Piggy Pignatti got to work at Rockwell Hall as an usher. Pignatti recommended getting an on-campus job or work-study program for all students in need of extra income.
Pignatti said “There are many jobs on the campus, and you can find a job you’d like to work or one in your major.”
The application process wasn’t too difficult, as they already had friends and roommates working for the school, so they asked them for help getting their jobs.
Pignatti also recommended that students go to the Career and Professional Education office or professors to find on-campus work.
The Career and Professional Education Office (CAPE) has many options for students to find work. CAPE recommends that students look on their website for Bengal Link.
Bengal Link is a program for students and alumni to find work related to their major. Bengal Link works similarly to Indeed where students apply for jobs and fill out an application specific to that job.
On-campus work is made to work around your schedule, and more often than not are willing to work with you. Since the jobs are with the school they are incentivized to allow the student to attend classes.
Jobs that are off campus do not have the same incentive and students are advised to try to have their job work around their schedule Per CAPE. A huge benefit of on-campus jobs is the ability to work with your friends and classmates, with many available jobs on campus you’re sure to find a job suited to your needs.
Students in an art major may find a job in the art gallery, or sports management majors could work within the gym or athletic center.
Other benefits of on-campus jobs relate to the specific job. Some jobs involving the athletic center or football field will allow them to see each sporting event.
Pignatti, who works at Rockwell Hall, is able to see every performance. Along with this, Pignatti is able to meet the performers backstage before and after the performances. Students with desk jobs may be able to work on classwork during work hours as well, further heightening not only the experience, but the balance of the jobs.
The new skills you’ll build working these jobs will help prepare you for jobs you may have in the future, whether they relate to your major or not.
If they do, that’s great, but if not, it still provides you with experience in group communication and several other essential qualities that you can use in whatever job you get.
So long as you have free time and some initiative you’ll have no problems finding a job that suits your needs. Who knows, you may be able to meet celebrities and make memories that will last a lifetime, so go and get a job.
