Caffe Aroma in the Elmwood Village strives to bring the art to you.
On Mondays, the cafe hosts art markets replete with crafts from independent artists who pop up tables on the sidewalk.
“It definitely brings people together,” said organizer Tyliyah Warren. “I really like that feeling of community and just giving people space to meet each other, talk and have a good time.”
These evening pop-ups, which run from 7pm to 10pm, provide an alternative gathering space outside of the typical bar scene.
“We are just trying to create a welcoming space and things for people to do kind of outside of the bar atmosphere,” said Caffe Aroma owner Michaela Schmidbauer.
Though they vary from week to week, items for purchase include jewelry, paintings, clothes, crafts, books and zines, pottery, hand-blown glass and even tarot readings.
The markets feature guitarists and other musicians playing live, as well as poets sharing their work at an open mic.
The events benefit the cafe as well as the artists.
“You definitely see an influx of foot traffic, because people are like, ‘Oh wow, there’s finally something going on, on a Monday night,’” said Schmidbauer.
“I do not want to charge vendors a fee to sell their stuff,” said Warren, referencing one of the reasons why so many artists choose to pop-up a stand day-of.
The accessibility of the event draws in a crowd of vendors and patrons alike.
“I’m just super excited that this is a thing, ‘cause not a lot of people are able to get or spend $120 at a flea market,” said Jessica Day, who sells her crafts under the name Psychedelic Dezignz.
Amy’s Place, a vegetarian restaurant on Main St., has also hosted art markets under Warren’s organization.
Warren plans to host more markets at both Caffe Aroma and Amy’s Place.
“It’s going to turn into once a month once it gets cold outside, so that’s going to change to indoors,” said Warren.
