In December 2023, George Santos, a former NYS House representative, was expelled from Congress, due to countless instances of ethical violations and misconduct.

Due to the expulsion of Santos, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a special election for NY’s 3rd Congressional District late last year. The special election was held on Tues. Feb. 13 to fill the vacant seat.

Both Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, and Mazi Pilip, a Republican, ran for the vacant seat. However, Suozzi ended up winning the seat in the House of Representatives.

With Suozzi voted in as a Congressional District representative, the House Republican majority continues to dwindle.

Politically speaking, Suozzi is focused on common-sense gun control, promoting democracy and human rights, and lowering taxes.

During his campaign, Suozzi focused on border security and immigration. This sent a message to the Democratic party that immigration is a concern among the populace, or at minimum, an effective use of rhetoric. The border crisis is certainly at the forefront of partisan politics.
