Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills walked into MetLife Stadium on Monday Night in hopes of finding its first win of the new season. What they ended up with was an upsetting loss to the Jets in an overtime thriller.
1st Quarter
The game started with some bad injury news for the New York Jets, who saw quarterback Aaron Rodgers leave the game on the first drive. Rodgers was later ruled out for the remainder of the game because of an ankle injury. That meant that the spotlight was on 2021 2nd overall pick Zach Wilson.
The highlight of this game was the Jets defense, or more specifically, safety Jordan Whitehead. The young defensive back from the University of Pittsburgh had not one, not two, but three interceptions in this game.
There was little scoring in the opening quarter. The Bills would end up with the first points of the game on a Tyler Bass field goal to take a 3-0 lead heading into quarter number two.
2nd Quarter
In the second quarter, it would be the Jets scoring first with a field goal of their own to tie the game at 3. Josh Allen would respond by throwing his first interception of the game to Jets safety Jordan Whitehead. However, the Jets couldn’t capitalize off the turnover and would instead punt the ball back to the Bills offense, who would then respond with the game’s first touchdown.
The Bills defense would then follow this up by forcing a turnover in the form of a Zach Wilson interception. The Bills would capitalize off the turnover, turning it into three more points as Buffalo took a 13-3 lead into halftime.
3rd Quarter
The Jets would start off with the ball in the second half. After a back and forth opening few minutes, the Jets would bring the deficit back to seven with another Greg Zuerlein field goal, bringing the score to 13-6. This is when the game would break wide open because Bills quarterback Josh Allen would throw his second interception of the game, again to Jordan Whitehead. The Jets could do nothing with this and would have to punt the ball back yet again to start the final quarter.
4th Quarter
After another few uneventful minutes, Josh Allen would throw another interception to Jordan Whitehead for his third interception of the game. This time the Jets defense’s hard work would not go unanswered as the Jets finally capitalized with a four-yard touchdown pass to Garret Wilson to tie the game at 13. Josh Allen would respond by tying his career high with his fourth turnover of the game with a fumble.
The Jets would then milk the clock down to less than two minutes and force the Bills to call two of their timeouts. The Jets would then take their first lead of the game on Greg Zuerlein’s third field goal going up 16-13 in the final two minutes.
That left Allen and the Bills with one timeout and just over a minute left to drive the field in quick succession leading to a last second field goal attempt by Tyler Bass, going off the left upright and good, forcing overtime.
Overtime
In overtime, the Bills would win the toss and start with the ball. Allen would struggle, throwing two incompletions and forcing the Bills to punt the football early into the overtime frame. Bills punter Sam Martain would kick a short kick to undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson, who would return the kick 65 yards for a walk-off touchdown.
Recap:
Bills
While the Buffalo Bills defense played well, the same thing cannot be said about the Bills offense. Quarterback Josh Allen had arguably his worst game of his career throwing three interceptions and fumbling the ball for a four-turnover night. The Bills will need to fix these issues ahead of their home opener in week two against Las Vegas.
Jets
Despite losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the first drive of the game, the Jets still got the victory on Monday Night thanks to an outstanding performance by their defense. The Jets forced four turnovers in the game including three interceptions from safety Jordan Whitehead. As for the Jets offense, they played good enough to get the win, and now look ahead to their week two tilt against the Dallas Cowboys.
