Buffalo State Junior was shot Monday night outside a deli in Queens, New York, police say.

Malachi Capers was seen on a surveillance video bumping into Jeffery Thurston which then caused a verbal altercation between the two. Capers then followed Thurston outside where he tackled Thurston to the ground. Thurston then pulled out a gun, shooting Capers in the stomach.

“Malachi was a well-liked member of our football family during his freshman year in 2018,” says Buffalo state football coach, Christian Ozolins. “He has remained a friend to many in our program as he continued his education at buffalo state after leaving the team after ongoing injury issues. We have him in our thoughts as we wish for a speedy recovery.”

“That’s my Brother,” said a friend of Capers. “He was one of the first friends I met during football camp. From there, our relationship grew.

“We started hanging out, eating together, going out together, and working out.”

Capers was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital.

All of the Buffalo State students, staff and faculty wish Capers all the best in his recovery.
