To some, philosophy may appear to be a realm of academia that encompasses posing unusual questions at 3:00 AM.
However, philosophy offers ideas that shake the fabric of our society, and offer innovative insights and perspectives into the human experience.
In April 2025, Buffalo State will be holding two presentations related to philosophy. This is referred to as the Buffalo State Philosophy Colloquium. The presentations will provide a unique perspective regarding the human experience as well as society.
On Thursday, April 3, 2025, Dr. John Abromeit, a Professor of History, will be presenting, “Frankfurt School Critical Theory and the Persistence of Authoritarian Populism in the United States.” The presentation will occur from 12:15 PM to 1:15 PM. The location will be Bulger Hall, Room 423.
Such a presentation is certainly relevant. Recognizing the elements of authoritarianism and the essence of fascism in the United States is essential.
Also, Glasha Zinenko will be leading a discussion regarding, “Moral Disagreeball: How to Disagree Productively.” This presentation will occur on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 12:15 PM to 1:15 PM in Bacon Hall, Room 117.
As civic discourse remains paramount in our society, delving into avenues that allows folks to effectively disagree is imperative. A well-connected society thrives on respectful dialogue.
Certainly, both presentations are an incredible opportunity for folks to delve into topics within philosophy that work to further cultivate an understanding of society, particularly given the sociopolitical context of today.
