“GooseChase” for Giving Tuesday coming to Buffalo State

SUNY Buffalo State is participating in Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1, 2015. Giving Tuesday is on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and it was created to kick off the theme of a charitable season.

From Nov. 10 to Dec. 1, students may participate in the “GooseChase” in preparation for Giving Tuesday. In order to participate, students may download the free GooseChase app for an iPhone and Android.

When installed, students can select the “Bengal Chase” game from the home screen. Students may also go on the #BengalChase page on the Buffalo State website, and sign up for the game that way. Missions for the game would be available on Nov. 10, 17, 24, and Dec. 1 via the app or website.

Most points for the game wins VIP seating at a Buffalo State spring 2016 campus sporting event and a halftime pizza party. Any student registered to participate in #BengalChase will have a chance to win weekly prizes as well.

Other than the GooseChase challenge, students may also participate in other activities for Giving Tuesday. For example, students may share a story about a random act of kindness by telling it on their social media accounts and adding #GivingTuesday and #UnLeashtheBengal at the end of it.

Buffalo State freshman Delshawn Wray was asked what he had done that gave back to someone or his community. When asked, Wray replied:

“I was at the bus stop on my way home the one day and I saw this lady crying so I walked up to her and gave her a hug. She started telling me about how she lost everything in her life and I could tell she was sincere so I gave her twenty bucks.”

Another Bufalo State freshman, Tom Sanly, was asked the same thing. When asked, Sanly replied:

“A few years ago I saw this old man that lived on my street shoveling his sidewalk and stairs. So I went over and shoveled his whole sidewalk stairs and driveway for him.”

Students may also take a UNselfie, which is a selfie uploaded to a social media website that includes a caption explaining how or why you or your friends are giving this year. The end of the caption on the selfie should be #GivingTuesday and #UnLeashtheBengal.

The last thing students may do in order to participate in Giving Tuesday is make a gift to the Meeting the Gap Fund. This is done via the Giving Tuesday page on the Buffalo State website.

The Meeting the Gap Fund was created to create funds for Buffalo State students who are in need of emergency financial assistance, who, without this support, are at risk of dropping out of college.

Giving Tuesday is held every Dec. 1 so everyone can give back to others, or their community.
